SOC LLC, a Day & Zimmermann (D&Z) company, contributed to the 67th annual Armed Forces Day in Hawthorne, Nevada. Hawthorne is known as ‘America’s Patriotic Home’ largely due to the impressive U.S. Military celebration it has hosted every Armed Forces Day for the past 66 years. At Hawthorne’s largest celebration of the year, Armed Forces Day, May 18th, SOC honored Veteran men and women in the service by participating in the parade, fireworks and community activities.
SOC has played a critical role as part of the Armed Forces Day events committee assisting with operations of festivities. SOC provided safety, transportation, planning, and sanitation services during the parade and other events. One unique task this year, SOC volunteered to help restore a historic float used in the same parade dating back to the 1950’s - a Serpent float- also the local Mineral County High School mascot.
This year, SOC designed a float that supports the annual, 'America's Military, Guardians of Freedom’. SOC’s 2017 float, the ‘Gateway to Freedom’ included gates that opened up to display the Statue of Liberty, the U.S. Flag, and the five U.S. Armed Forces Service seals, etc.
About Armed Forces Day
President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense.
